The statues in niches around the exterior of the church capture your attention. Some are originals; some are now copies, with originals in the church museum or elsewhere. This church began as a marketplace, and the interior still reflects that fact: the altar is off-center to accommodate the market; pillars still have visible grain chutes. The altar is magnificent. The statues adorning the outside are magnificent! It compounds the sensory overload that is Florence. Everywhere you turn, there is something amazing to see. More

The only real Gothic church in Florence. The altarpiece is original 13th c and the outside hosts the copies of several Renaissance masters. The originals are in the Bargello and the Orsanmichele museum across the street. More

Orsanmichele is a beautiful church - worth a visit for the paintings. However, if you happen to be in Florence on a Monday, there is a museum which houses all of the statues commissioned by the various guilds, which used to adorn the outside of the church. These are the original stautes which are positioned in the same order as... More

Much of the interior is dull, but the statuary on the upper floors is interesting. The photography ban is excessively enforced, which seems such a shame for somewhere that doesn't even sell postcards of what it holds. More

Or San Michele has an interesting history. It served as a guildhall at the beginning of the Renaissance, and the niches were apportioned out to the major guilds, each of which was to decorate its niche with a statue related to its craft. Around 1400 the guilds, many of which had dithered along on this, were told to use it... More

Just pop in this church when going between the Piazza del Duomo and the Piazza della Signoria as it is roughly in between, and entrance is free of charge. This medieval church has many statues on the walls created by the guilds of the city. Interiorly there is a marvellous tabernacle by Orcagna with a painting by Bernardo Daddi, and... More

Most people walk by this building and don't even notice this but this is my favority in Florence and probably in Italy. Donatello's St George (now a replica - original in is the Bargello Museum) and St Mark are here. Also statues done originally by Verrocchio and Ghiberti. If you love the buliding you have to go inside. No pictures... More

Interesting site to visit but very crowded with commercial tour groups and unable to find a site specific guide or even a staff member who spoke English to get info. Unless you are with a tour group or speak Italian, be sure to read material about the site on your own. More
