The Florence Cathedral was built between 1296 and 1461, and is capped by Brunelleschi’s magnificent Dome, a Renaissance masterpiece (until recently the largest dome in the world). Built between 1334-1359, the Campanile is a showpiece of Florentine Gothic architecture. The Baptistry of St. John (Battistero di San Giovanni) is a Romanesque octagon which is one of the oldest buildings in... More

Climbing up to the dome is a fantastic experience. On the way up you are taken through a viewing gallery which allows a really good view of the dome. You can marvel at how it was constructed without scaffolding and get a really good view of the Day of Judgement! On the way down you are taken along a walkway... More

After looking at the inside of this amazing building, there was really no choice but to do the huge climb to the top - and it was so worth it. The view over all of Florence and out to the hills of Tuscany was amazing. And it was really possible to get an appreciation for the level of skill that... More

Amazing on the outside! Not as exciting on the inside but worth the visit. The line to get in moved quickly. There is the option to go up to the dome and outside. We did not do this becuase we chose to go up the bell tower instead. One or the other is good- no need to do both. More

What can I say that hasn't been said about one of the most famous cathedrals of Europe?? Attended Sunday mass and enjoyed the worship in Italian. It was very cold so make sure you take a wrap! More
