I visited here in April 2008 and was very disappointed by the amount of areas that were closed off to the public. I guess I still would have wanted to see the inside of the church anyway (who knows when I'll ever be back to Florence), but the Laurentian Library was closed as well as other areas, for renovation/restoration. Old, old church. Photos are not allowed inside. Construction began in the 1390s. Contains Brunelleschi's Old Sacristy which has some beautiful shades of blue still vivid in it. The Medici family were for over a hundred years the leaders of Florence, and they lavished their money on this, their parish church. The facade is unfinished (Michelangelo drew up plans to decorate it, but never got the chance) but inside it is lavishly decorated. Visited Florence June 21-24, 2005. Extremely impressive dome which is a must see. Unfortunately, restoration limited our enjoyment. Unexpected entrance fee to a church but well worth it. more
