Part of the charm of Lucca is the fact that the old Roman walls still stand and still encircle the historical city. Walking or biking the walls is a delightful way to spend some time in Lucca. You will see hundreds of other people, tourists and locals alike, on the walls with you. You have very nice views of the... More

It's a great way to walk around the city and get to different quaters realtively quickly but I thought there would be more to "see" from the walls. Still, it's a great green space and was full of walkers, joggers, etc. More

Le mura wraps around the historic city and has "baluardos" or points of access with ramps or stairs of various degrees of incline and ease of climbing. These are located at intervals all around to provide access from the streets below. The distance around is about 3 mi. and It's lovely to walk or bike. It is very wide with... More

There can't be many cities in Europe that have original and unbroken walls and where a total circumnavigation is possible atop the walls. More

We rented bikes from the tourist information 3 euro for each bike per hour (bikes rather rickety and the staff didn't have a spanner to tighten the pedals). We cycled quite quickly twice around the walls - trying to beat the rain. Excellent hour spent dodging other cyclists and pedestrians. Lovely picnic spots but the weather was not suitable on... More

We walked the walls (4km) several times and had lovely views over to the surrounding walls as well as fascinating glimpses of intramural life. While we were there an exhibition about the history of the walls opened actually inside the wall at Porta San Pietro. It was very well done apart from poor translation of information into English. We took advantage of the free bike rental at our hotel and rode around Le Mura on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. It was lovely to see so many people walking and riding bikes and taking advantage of the gorgeous weather and scenery. It took about 20 minutes riding at a leisurely pace, stopping for pictures, to make a circle of... More

It was a great workout as long as you can avoid the joggers, runners and cyclists. Good exercise in all weathers More
