There are actually 2 Museums of Torture in this tiny city, and apparently a torture museum in every town in Europe we visited. It's a small, clean museum with many antiseptic devices and a long description of how the devise was used next to it. I didn't find this a pleasurable, or particularly illuminating experience. If you're visiting St Gimignano *make sure* you also pay a short visit to the museo della tortura. as my predecessing reviewer stated, the museum building itself is rather interesting. you immediately feel transfered into the old times when god-like pope-sent inquisitors spoke thir dark verdicts. Every room looks quite "spooky" with that little touch of the dark middle ages... more

The Museo Della Tortura is located in the Piazza Cisterna in San Gimignano. The cost, as of December 2002, is €8,00. Pretty steep for a dozen or so small rooms totalling no more than 100-150 items. If you're into the macabre, though, you should not pass it by. Originals and reproductions of instruments of torture and execution from medieaval times... more
