There is a lot of restoration still happening to this building and given its location in the red light district I was none too surprised to see many people oscillating around it each early morning. The location right alongside the canal appearing to rise out of the water is amazing enough, and the fact that the walls are still plumb... More

A magnificent building strangely out of place in the red light district! If you like architecture, you'll love the Oude Kerk but be warned there is a lot of restoration work going on (that's set to continue into 2013) so be prepared to see the odd JCB type digger while you're looking at the indoor gravestone of Rembrandt's wife! The Oude Kerk is a beautiful church in central Amsterdam, apparently the oldest building in the city. It's completely surrounded by the red light district - entering it feels like you're entering a calm oasis. The misericords (wooden carvings) on the choir stall seats are well worth a look, some are rather witty comments on medieval life. Parts of the... More

take the time to visit this protestant church- it is a window to the reformation and stunning. It was both awe inspiring and humbling. More

I loved this church, but have to confess that I can't really say why! Perhaps it is the pure minimalism of it (a few pews, no set altars, large empty space) combined with the soaring elegant roof. Perhaps it's the sheer disdain for tourists as the guidance/leaflets etc are really useless (buy a guide before going or you'll be none-the-wiser... More

Very interesting. It is the oldest monument/church in Amsterdam. Use your guidebook to make your visit worthwhile!!!! Otherwise it is less interesting -- it is worth knowing, for example that it was a Catholic church, then during the reformation the Protestants removed images and other Catholic items. Do not buy the video / DVD they sell. The content and images... More
