When I visited, the Rijksmuseum was only partially open and under scaffolding, so my impressions are possibly not entirely fully formed. But this is still a worthwhile stop on a cultural tour of Amsterdam. The impact of Rembrandt and his school is clear, as is the focus on the Dutch East Indies Company and the colonial heritage of the country. more

Lots of museum renovations going on in Amsterdam simultaneously. Visited Sept/Oct 2009 and the Modern is closed, but has some stuff in Van Gogh, the Van Gogh is limited, the Rijks is under construction but still open but very limited - same price. Construction thru 2013 anticipated per employees. The Hermitage is AVOID! Boring and poorly displayed with little rhyme... more

I visited the Rijksmuseum in August 2009, hoping to find a wide variety of interesting Dutch art. I was disappointed. Amsterdam's 'largest' museum didn't seem to be very large at all and seemed to be mainly dedicated to Rembrandt and his protiges. The highlight by far is 'The Night Watchman' which is very impressive, although how they could cut the... more

Just FYI- lots of museum renovations going on in Amsterdam. Just visted in August 2009 and the Modern is closed, but has some stufff in Van Gogh, the Van Gogh is thus limited, the Rijks is under construction but semi open- you enter around the side (right if facing from canal) and it has 14 rooms open- enough, but barely.... more

Visit: April 2009: I was surprised by how little there was to see. What was on display was simply fascinating, but I was expecting more. I am glad that we didn't stand in the long lines that we saw earlier in the day and that our admission was included in the iAmsterdam pass. We were able to see "The Night... more

We went to the Rijksmuseum on Saturday April 25. Arrived to stand in line for 45 minutes from 1000h to 1045h as we watched tour groups march straight in. Hint: buy your ticket online or at one of the canal tour boat docks and save the wait time. Entrance was 11 euro each - and we were then able to... more

I loved seeing the masters: Rembrandt, Vermeer, etc. Most of the museum is closed for renovation...I can only imagine what the rest of the awesome building looks like. The cost of admission was absolutely worth it. My favorite exhibit was For the love of God by Damien Hirst - which closed on Dec 15. Definitely see this masterpiece if you... more

This is probably one of the best galleries I have ever been to. From the absurdly huge ancient dollhouses to the wonderful intricate Vermeers (The Milkmaid is just enchanting), I was in awe at every step. Please go to this gallery! more

I just returned from 9 days in Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum was one of my favorite sites. We had invested in the 39 Euro museumcard which payed dividends for us, as we went to most of the museums in the city. Like the Hermitage, the collections of the the Rijks were limited - but I still felt like I got... more
