such a shame that this beautiful city as such a bad horrible entrance when you travel here by train. Don't let it put you down, if you've passed this street, you have seen the worst. It will only get better after this. More

Damrak is the street that connects Amsterdam Central Station with Dam square. On one hand a string of shops and cheap restaurants almost exclusively catering to tourists, on the other hand busy rail tracks carrying many trams to and from the train station. In between is a walkway with thousands of people marching along. If you do find yourself here... More

My hostel is located here and it's awesome! The oldest district with the coolest buildings (not to mention the coffeeshops - again, take a tour!) More

Damrak is a good starting point for your trip. If you arrive by train, the exit of the station brings you to Damrak. Here several touristboats start. Bijenkorf is a great department store. Don't miss local liquors at the Rode Leeuw. More

Its crowded, dirty, noisy ~ pedestrians and cyclists all fighting for pavement space, and the air smells of weed all the time. LOVE IT!!! Hahaha .... to me it is THE smell and atmosphere of Amsterdam. Entire street lined with rip off shops selling tacky souvenir items and cheap t-shirts, cafes and restaurants with loud signs but poorly cooked food... More

You can look at the Damrak in two ways: either as a wide boulevard almost everyone visiting Amsterdam walks up or down due to Central Station being at one end. In which case it's crowded but does the job. Or as a destination in itself, in which case: avoid, or at least keep walking. With the possible exception of the... More
