I preferred the old version before 2000 but the renovated building is stunning as is the reconstructed vessel "Amsterdam", an Indiaman merchant vessel of the East Indian Trading Company. An interest in marine matters helps in appreciating this museum. More

I have never been happier spending much of one full day going through all the exhibits and the real ship out at the dock imagining I was a captain or crewman 300 years ago...... Nothing was spared to make this place a treasure trove of information, paintings, ship models like you won't believe..... totally amazing would be a real understatement.... More

This place is really worth a visit. The building is beautiful and numerous exhibits to view with many interactive ones too. The admission also includes access to the replica historic sailing ship. More

I particularly liked the replica of the old merchant ship on the seaside. The museum is a tour into past centuries when Dutch naval activities was at its peak and Dutch commercial vessels ("The Flying Dutchmen") played a dominant role in world trade. A must-visit location while in Amsterdam. More

My husband suggested this and I wasn't sure but I really enjoyed it. It was an interesting introduction to the Netherlands' colonial past and I particularly recommend the interactive experience which is great fun even if you don't speak Dutch More

I am a Navy buff and like old ships, so this was a must see when I visited Amsterdam. I had a I Amsterdam pass which gave free entry, but I wonder if the museum would be worth the high entry fee for a casual visitor. The museum is, understandably, built around a replica of a 17th century VOC ship.... More

We did not plan to see the whole museum and as we had Museumkaarts, we could get in for free anyway, so we just popped in to see the ship on the way from NEMO. The ship is a recent replica of a Dutch East Indies Company ship which sank off Hastings and it contains a display of the sort... More
