The Hortus Botanicus is NOT your average tourist attraction. It is a botanical garden, and a rather intellectual one at that. ALL plants are "natural" varieties that occur in the wild, so there are no fancy hibrids with exotic blossoms. You should think of this as a plant museum, not a flower show. We were slightly disappointed with these botanical gardens, which cost 6 Euros each to enter. We had a nice drink and cake in their Orangery café, and then spent about an hour walking round. The outside display areas were only of limited interest and, in contrast to everything else we enjoyed in Amsterdam, nearly all of the information was only... more

The Hortus was very pleasant to walk thru on a cold rainy day. We visited the market at Waterlooplein and walked the block or so to the Hortus. There are some very exotic plants in an interesting setting. The gardens were not much to see in late November, but the buildings and inside plants were great. more
