The entrance to the building is a jewel of the Art nouveau style while the rest is in perfect harmony with the neoclassical ensemble on the Place Royale, and just around the corner from the Grand Place and Central Station, no less! It's here in this architectural gem that the MIM took up residence in June 2000. The museum's reputation is mainly built on its extraordinary collections. With a wealth of some 7000 instruments, the MIM is currently an internationally renowned instrumental museum. Once inside, you'll embark on a true tour of the musical world. After your trip past the some 1500 pieces on exhibit, the instruments and their history will no longer hold any secrets: from viole da gamba from the Court of Brussels to the 20th century theremin, and even including the African kora! And be sure not to miss our area devoted to the instruments of Adolphe Sax. The MIM is nothing other than a place to experience music. An infrared headphone system allows each visitor to explore the thematic tours to the tune of the melodious sound of the instruments presented. Translation is no problem. Everyone knows that music is a universal language. « less

We really enjoyed visiting the MIM. We paid 6E each and it was worth it. You are handed headphones that are activated when you stand in front of certain instruments and you can hear what they would have sounded like. The collection is amazing, from different countries and different eras. It was fascinating to see instruments from China and Africa... more

Upon visiting Brussels this past summer, we wound up our tour at this truly memorable site! With approximately 1,500 musicla intruments housed on about 5 floors it was rather manageable to take in the splendor of it all. It's logically laid out, both chronologically and countrywise--and the interactive experience is fabulous! A real winner! more

I am no musician and still enjoyed this place. It's really cool. You get an audio guide so you can hear the instruments. You have to stand in a certain spot o here which can be kind of odd. The instruments are like art work more

I really enjoyed this place. First of all, the building is really beautiful. I dig art neuveau, and this was building probably the finest I've been in. It's worth visiting the museum just to explore the site. Architecture aside, however, the collection is fun. I'm not musical, but you don't have to have any background knowledge to enjoy the experience.... more

This was a great museum to visit as it was so interactive. My family loved hearing all the different sounds and comparing the historic instruments. The building itself had such character. The views from the top floor restaurant were awesome. If I went back again I would make Sunday brunch resrevations and then visit the museum after or end the... more

I liked this museum better than the one in Berlin. At first, I wasn't sure it was going to be worth the 5 euro entrance fee as you walk into a funky old building with a glass elevator in the middle. However, as I began to discover the side rooms on each floor, I was blown away by not only... more

This museum is set in a lovely Art Noveau style building and contains a large selection of every kind of musical instrument imaginable. On arrival, you are given a headset. When you stand in front of certain instruments, you will automatically hear a recording of that instrument. On the whole this works very well, although on occasion your reception is... more
