Gravensteen Castle is set near the confluence of two canals but unlike many other castles it has no grounds wedged on a street corner with shops and hotels on all sides. Self guided tour. There are exhibits of weaponry and torture devices. Some areas of the castle appear newly remodeled, but some ruins, such as the kitchen, appear to be original. We visited the castle on 13 Aug when a 'living history' event was taking place. Although mainly re-constructed in early 1900s the castle has good views from the keep and walls and small exhibitons of armour and weapons, and also of torture! Climbing the castle's towers offers one of the most spectacular views of Ghent. Be sure not to miss the museum of medieval armor/weaponry and instruments of torture. more
