The Megalithic monuments from Alentejo were erected in the Neolithic (6000-3000 BC), by the oldest communities of farmers and shepherds in the region.Today, they profile themselves, indelible, as messages from other times in the stillness of the plain.Ebora Megalithica is a project of public archaeology. The aim is to promote the megaliths of Alentejo as part of a wider cultural framework and to create cultural products based on scientific knowledge, communication and art.The guided tours to this amazing heritage are accompanied by a local archaeologist, specialized in pre-history, and they offer a truly insightful perspective about the cultural and archaeological background of the sites and the surrounding landscape. « less

I loved this tour because our wonderful guide Mario not only provided information about the interesting megalithic sites, but he taught us all about Evora and the surrounding Alentejo region as well. We learned about the cork and olive trees and the animal farms in the region, and it provided us with a great insight into this beautiful region of... More

We spent a wonderful morning in April 2012 with Mario visiting the megalitihic sites around Evora. His knowledge is matched by his enthusiasm. We learnt a lot, and the trip was extremely enjoyable. More

A tour of this calibre is not to be missed. The knowledge, passion and insights shared by Mario were invaluable to anyone with an interest in prehistory and the development of the human race. The scenery is pretty good too. More

My husband and I took this tour by chance - we wanted to visit the sites, and this just happened to be the tour we picked. We lucked out, because it could not have been better. Mario is very knowledgeable about the sites and archeology and his passion for the sites and their preservation shows. We learned a lot about... More

This morning visit to 3 monuments included a hotel pick-up and drive to the monuments. Once our driver parked, we had only short walks on rustic paths through fields of cork-barked trees. Our interpreter, Mario, an archaeologist, gave an interpretation of the sites that offered us a deeper understanding of the city, Evora. We really liked that we were in... More

Mario the guide provides an informed, impassioned tour of the collection of neolithic monuments surrounding Evora. His insights into the geographical importance of the monuments, their historical significance and the importance of their preservation were impressive. Eye opening tour - great. More

Mario Carvalho runs a small bus tour to the major megalithic sites around Evora. We expected that an exposition would improve our understanding of the sites. We got a lot more than that. We gained insight into Stonehenge, sites in Ireland and in France, as well as the local sites, through Mario's excellent explanation of the likely reasons for certain... More
