About
The collections of the Museum of Evora consist of about 20 thousand pieces, which highlight the collections of Painting, Sculpture and Archaeology. Besides the aesthetic value and historical importance of many works, the only condition is the panorama of museums in Portugal, the fact that its core come from an eighteenth-century collection of great diversity and inclusiveness, organized by Frei Manuel of the Upper Room, Archbishop of Evora. It is in the organization of the collections system, in order to articulate all fields of knowledge, which expresses the thinking Library-Museum and its educational function in the second half of the eighteenth century in Portugal. This initial condition and this universalistic core also part of the collections of Numismatic unfortunately looted during the French invasions, the collections of drawings and prints, and the core of Naturalia, where they meet several specimens of Natural Sciences. The extinction of the religious orders contributed significantly to extend the estate, benefiting from the collections of Painting and Sculpture, and Decorative Arts with the constitution of several nuclei important as jewelery, ceramics, furniture and textiles. Conducting numerous archaeological excavations during the twentieth century, especially on the Prehistory and Roman times, has enriched the Museum's collection, deepening the relationship with the history of the city and the region.

This was a three floor museum nearby the Roman Temple. A free audio guide helped provide more details for a number of the numbered exhibits.

The lower floor contained the basement and temporary exhibits but the entrance was closed. We could only see those exhibits above from the first floor.

The first floor contained most of the marble, stone artifacts and statues along with an excavation of probable knights burial crypts.

The third floor contained paintings from many different Portuguese artists as well as Flemish. The most famous being the huge 13 panel Life of the Virgin that was commissioned to hang in the Evora Cathedral.

Lockers were in the lobby as we had to store our daypacks before entering the museum floor.

We spent 2 hours here and only left because it was closing. The audio guide was helpful and there's decent descriptions in English. Note that there are no famous paintings or anything, but what they do have on display is worth seeing. The Roman relics were pretty cool and you'll get a decent history of the region.

What interested us the most were the Roman relics and the Iron Age artifacts.

The items are named but the QR codes for the audio guide didn’t work and the staff weren’t very helpful. They confirmed that the copies of the QR codes didn’t work but were not able to give us the URL.

If you like religious art and paintings you might like this museum.

This is great little museum that only cost 1.50 Euro each. A great collection of art with many religious artifacts. Located on a square with the Roman Temple ruins and a small park with great views.

Not being a big history person I found the displays to be so-so. Did not see the archeological display that we were looking for. Museum did not seem to flow all that well.

This museum located around the corner from the main cathedral has an interesting collection of archeological artifacts dating from the Stone Age through early Roman period as well as paintings ranging from the 15th to the 19th century as well as some sculpture from the 19th century. Highlights include The wedding feast by Peter Bruges the younger and The Life of the Virgin a 13 panel series by Flemish artists. Admission is modest and it is a nice break from all the churches

I've rated this five stars in the context of expectations - I've visited far more impressive museums but few have the organization and close ties to the immediate region that we found at the Museu de Évora. The ground floor offers masonry fragments from the Roman period through the Visigoth and Moorish occupations and on to the Christian reconquest. Upstairs there are displays of religious paraphernalia, furniture, and a fascinating collection of religious art. We spent an engrossing three hours in the museum, including a couple temporary sculpture exhibitions. It's a nice capstone to a walking tour of the city.
