There is little to actually see in the castle, but the views and possible photo opportunities of the city are unparalleled. You can walk all the walls and climb the towers, with nary a guardrail in sight - which makes it a lot of fun for castle-lovers. Non-castle buffs can stroll the lower levels but there isn't a lot to... more

My partner and I stayed at Castelo de Sao Jorge for 3 nights in July 2007. We booked it through Tablet hotels and having used the website before to book many other great hotels was expecting this to be pretty good. The staff were lovely and freindly and went out of their way to suggest local acitivites and good nearby... more

I wish I had read the reviews here in advance. This castle is a ripoff. Its only value is the view, and like others have said, you can get great views from other locations for free. Example, go to the top of the VIP Eden hotel! In addition, the day we visited there, the winds were outrageous and we were... more

It's difficult to understand why a structure such as a castle should be patched up using concrete blocks and cement render . . quite apalling. We found it ironically amusing though, the render is coming off in chunks, clearly ancient building methods remain superior! Whether we were just unlucky or whether the people running the castle really do have absolutely... more

The Castelo's a big fraud. It's a relatively modern reconstruction of the medieval structure, and there's really not much to see aside from the views. There is an admission fee to see the castle, but what they don't tell you is that there isn't really much more than the walls. The castle is empty inside. The signs say there are... more

I was really disappointed with the castle. I noticed on the way up that the guidebook refers to the castle as medieval, only "medieval" is in quotes. That's right, it's reconstructed "medieval." That's ok - except no where can you tell what was reconstructed and what is original. There are also no signs or anything that give you any history... more

If you want great views of the city, then visit the castle. You get to see most of the city from the castle, which is high above the city centre, but still close to it. If you want to walk up to it, it will take a strenuous 30 minute walk from the city centre. You can't see the castle... more

I never would have thought it, and I've been to a lot of the most well-known castle countries, but Portugal has amazing castles! Castelo Sao Jorge in Lisbon is no exception. It's clean, well-maintained, full of history, offers breathtaking views of the city and the river, and it's pretty easy to get to. At first I was dismayed because there's... more

Ok, first thing to be sure you know is that the tour guide you might have will tell you "we have to walk to the top because the bus can't go to the top" to get to the castle. Well, yes, it is true that a large tour bus cannot navigate the narrow streets to the top, but it is... more
