This building acts as a reminder of the great earthquake. From the inside, you can see the gracefulness of the original church including some of the surviving sculptures and friezes. In good weather, the contrast between the feeling of being in a church and seeing the blue sky overhead is interesting. The building also has a small museum of curiosities... More

Definitely worth a visit, cool and semi-destroyed, not too big- possible to reasonably explore in about an hour. More

Lovely cathedral ruins in the Biarro Alta with a serene atmosphere and quirky museum of natural history artefacts. 3.50 euro entry price for adults and a 45 minute should suffice. Many bars and restaurants outside for a cheeky moscatel afterwards. More

My partner and I fell in love with this quirky spot. The former Gothic church is one of the most picturesque places in Lisbon. Despite the fact that the 1755 earthquake left the church in ruins there is still something beautiful about it. We spent a good half hour photographing her "open-to-the-sky" interior. The architectural features are unique and the... More

My husband and I decided that we couldn't miss coming to see this because of how beautiful the arches were. It certainly did not disappoint! Looking up and seeing the graceful arches of the remains against a blue sky was simply inspiring. Well worth the admission price (cash only-it's about 2.5 euro per person) In the back of the church... More

This is hands down the most amazing church I have ever seen. 2 historical events- during building, the ledge the church was built on shifted and the front half split off. You can see damage/repair work from the catwalk on the side. Then in 1755 with the great earthquake, the roof fell in. Seeing the 'ribs' from the outside is... More

This was a magical place! Specially at night how it gets illuminated it's just wonderful. For me it is definitely in the top 5 attractions in Lisbon. It is specially enchanting when visiting after taking the elevador de san justa. The collection itself didn't caught much of my attention but the building itself, and being able to see the sky... There's not really a huge amount to look at here. We went because we wanted to see inside and because we thought that the museum might be interesting. If you are in two minds about visiting, then maybe give it a miss. It is not cheap and the view from the inside is not particularly more impressive than the view... More

The earthquake of 1755 and the ensuing days of fire and tsunamis which destroyed most of what was then Lisboa was a shatterring and most traumatic event in "recent" Portuguese history. Prior to the earthquake Lisboa was one of the richest cities in Europe and a vibrant trading entrepot. Although, thanks to the dogged persistence of the Marquis de Pombol,... More
