A great half day trip out of Funchal. Beautiful scenery, steep cliffs and a wonderful stop in the city itself for a taste of their wallnut cakes or the "poncho" if you are not driving LOL
Beautiful place.

Take the 81 bus (about 3 euros). It is quite a white knuckle ride in itself, If you are quite fit get off at the hotel at the top, walk up to 'The Eagles Nest' about 500 metres and you will see the most magnificent sight. You are on the cusp of the old volcano. Now you can have a...

This is an ABSOLUTE must for any visitor to Madeira. The views are awe inspiring DO take your camera.
There is no problem in accessing the valley whether you choose a tour guided bus, local buses which run on a regular basis from the main town or do as my husband and I have done several times, alight at the cafe/shop...

We cruised to Medeira with NCL and booked a half day tour with Strawberry World which went to Nun's valley via the look-out point of Eira do Serrado. This gave us an incredible view of the valley before we descended into it for a quick walk around the isolated village at the heart of the island. I would recommend cruisers...

Really good half day trip with an excellent guide. The village does not have much to offer but the views are excellent from the view point at the top. Stopped at Camara de Lobos on the way back to Funchal which is a really pretty fishing village. Try their local drink, 'Nikita' when there.

The trip to and from Curral das Freiras is not for the faint hearted and is truly spectacular on twisting mountain roads. By minibus taking about ten people it should only cost €10 to €12 per person and is well worth it. We were also taken to a viewpoint over Funchal and a fantastic viewpoint overlooking Nun's valley which necessitated...

In truth, the town itself does not offer to much to see, it is what you see from the village up. Grab a coffee in one of the cafe's and sit and marvel at the 360 degree views and the sheer scale of the mountains around you.
There is a walk from here back up to Eira do Serrado which...
