A flat, clean, well-maintained esplanade that runs beside the sea all the way from the port via the town centre to the Forte de Sao Tiago. Brass bands played and we were able to watch Madeiran dancing. Loads of restaurants and cafes. We loved to sit with a coffee and watch the world go by....

When thirsty or hungry one can easily find some food or beverage alongside this agreable seaside promenade and along the Avenida there are lots of shops where one can buy all kinds of souvenirs. Bus traffic is very heavy and noisy and fumes may be unpleasant at times.
