I have been here briefly on many occasions over the last ten years, to see the bustling of the locals...at the main entrance , left side.you will see a local cafe - had one of the best 'bica' espresso ever & at local prices,.. then stunning Portugues tiles mounted on the wall on both sides..continue past the arrangements of flower... The exotic flowers are truly amazing sold by the ladies in their traditional costume and hats and they let you look without being too pushy. The spectacle of these exotic blooms alone merits a very good rating itself. The fish market down stairs from the flower vendors is a sight with all those ugly looking black scabbard fish and the massive... More

If in Funchal it is a must to visit the covered market Mercado dos Lavradores. Exotic fruits flowers and vegetables and wonderful seafood. Extremely colourful especially the flower women,in national dress, selling the most amazing local flowers. Also many other stalls selling local goods. More

Interesting place. I visited the place on the night of December 23rd. If you don't like crowded places avoid visiting the market that night. However, if you like to experience the best night at the market, is the night to visit the market. You can do shopping all night long. People from all over the island came to the market... More

Interesting place but not too much on offer. Watch out at the top of the stairs for hawkers falling over themselves to offer you samples of wonderful exotic fruit, only to fill a bag and pressure you into buying it (€22 in our case), or not let you go until you pay a 'tip'. This was our one and only... More

When we arrived at the market, the sweet smell dragged us into a new culture. The people will let you taste all their merchandise. There were kinds of fruit that we've never tasted before. It was an amazing experience and their dried fruit is a must ( dried strawberries, dried kiwi, melon...) There is also a fish market which is... More

Beautiful architecture, colorful market : an ideal place to take pictures but not to do shopping. Fruit sellers (especially upstairs) try to rip off tourists. I observed their crooked way to weigh fruits : if you buy several types of fruits, they weigh all of them together and charge you the highest price. You pay fruits 5 times the price... More

I love photographing markets, and this is a gorgeous one, as others have said. Everybody has remarked on the high cost of the fruit, and the difficulty of saying no after one has tasted the fruit. What I haven't seen posted is the fact that the *downstairs* of the market, although less pretty, is *much* cheaper. In fact, after having... More

There is something about markets that pulls us in and often one of the first places we want to visit when we go away. I have seen so many markets in so many towns in so many countries that for me, an apple is an apple, olives in a barrel are the same colour and size as the ones in... More
