This was a wonderful restful garden with less tourists than elsewhere. The garden was well maintained and in glorious colour, it was a pleasure to see roses out at the same time as a number of border plants which would not be out when the roses are out in England. We were advised by our tour operator to get a... More

We went by public bus from Funchal to these gardens (the bus stops outside the gate) owned by the Blandy family of madeira wine fame. Adult entry costs about 12 euros and the guide booklet is worth getting for an additional two euros. The house isn't open to the public but the extensive gardens are well worth visiting. We particularly... More

When preparing for our trip I selected this garden as a "must see". Than during a trip around the island we met a couple, who advised us to go there if we love gardens. Palheiro garden is very different from the Tropical or the Botanical Garden, it is really more like and English garden in its arrangements but with flowers,... More

These gardens are absolutely stunning at any time of year, the best of the gardens that we have visited in the Funchal area. Personally, we would not wish to go in a group, because we value time wandering round stopping wherever we wish and admiring the plants. The entrance drive is very long, and may present considerable difficulty for those... More

Not good value for money and visitors are guided in through the worst maintained part of the gardens first. Best parts are near the hotel with some cheeky hen topiary probably the highlight of the garden. One gardener visible with a noisey petrol driven leaf blower the entire time we were there, evidence of gadgets not gardening in grounds that... More

We spent a lovely couple of hours here on our last day. Although slightly further out of Funchal (6 miles) the gardens are delightful. Laid out in a very English style they were a delight and very quiet for a Sunday. Ignore the guidebooks that say they are only open Mon-Fri - they're wrong! Make sure you try the tea... More

The rough downhill road from the entrance is tricky for senior citizens to negotiate and calls for serious attention to make it safe for walking and in late February the camelias which line it were not at their best. However once the formal gardens are reached, the situation distinctly improves. Here the paths and steps are well maintained and the... More

Restaurant located on the premises of "Quinta do Palheiro", which comprises a Golf course, a hotel and several other touristic facilities, and is settled in a place with a terrific view to the Funchal coastline and harbour. Once here, you can stay for hours just enjoying the views. The service is very efficient and discreet, and the food, although not... More

Palheiro is 10,50 euros and the Jardim Do Botanico is 3 euros. Given the difference you'd think that Palheiro would be three times as nice. Quite the opposite. Particularly when compared with Jardim Do Botanico is is grossly overpriced. The gardens are medicore at best. More
