It's wonderful to walk the Anafiotika and feel what the real residential area above the Plaka must have been like decades ago. It's pretty easy to find your way around and a couple of the commercial guide books have defined walking tours that take you through this area. I like to combine this walk with a visit to the Agora... More

This small area just next to Acropolis was simply wonderful, small streets and tiny old houses with locals still living in there. Filled with plants, original architecture and cute cats all the way around:) One of the most romantic districts in the Greek Capital. More

See title: a romantic stroll. If you're lucky, some of the tiny churches may be open. If not, concentrate on the plants and the cats. Don't forget to look up from time to time. More

It is a specific area inside Plaka area. It lies below the rock of the Acropolis and it was built by people from Anafi island. This is why the houses look different. It is a very nice walk to go. More

Of the thousands of tourists who visit the Plaka every day, only a few get to glimpse the jewel in the crown of this most atmospheric neighbourhood. If you don’t know where to look, Anafiotika is easy to overlook. The small cluster of whitewashed “island” houses is situated directly below the massive Greek flag at the eastern end of the... More

We were making our way to the Parthenon and it was quite a surprise to come across this village at the foot of the Acropolis. This white washed village which was carved out of the rocks is reminiscent of a village in Santorini. This village was dug out of the rocks by stonemasons from the island of Anafi (near Santorini)... I remember Anafiotika surprised me happily when I first came across them completely ignorant of their existence many years back. They create the impression of walking in a Greek island and this makes it so special. I urge tourists to include Anafiotika in their “must see” list. It is about a cluster of small houses built by some workers who... More
