Fascinating to walk around - mind bending to imagine the engineering that went into the original palace, especially the plumbing. The work of the original excavation team continues today; even with the controversy over whether the site should have been "reconstructed" in areas, it shows what a powerful civilization this must have been. A Minoan treasure. More

We really enjoyed our visit to Knossos, but this is probably because we got there right when it opened, and avoided the crowds. We also sprung for a private guide, who taught us quite a bit more than we would have been able to glean from the signs, and our guidebooks. Even though she was clearly on a script, we... More

Clearly an important site, but I wonder about the reconstructions and interpretations. The 19th/early 20th archaeologist (Evans) virtually 'invented' the site. or rather he interpreted through a template which seems to have been based on a reading of Frazer's "Golden Bough" (king priests et al). The physical reconstructions are difficult to digest - a model of the whole site showing... More

We had been warned by our tour guide in Pompeii that these ruins had been restored according to the imagination of Evans, however this still did not prepare us for the extent of "new" repairs that look almost comical. Having said this, the ruins are still worth a visit, with signage being adequate to skip the guided tours available at... More

Hot and crowded with impenetrable tour groups, Knossos 'done up' by Arthur Evans is worth a visit, but there are MUCH better Minoan sites on Crete - Phaistos particularly. More

We had a guide who insisted on giving us a detailed lecture on history..and that kind of spoiled the trip...although we appreciated the efforts she put in. The site area is a much less than I had expected and since we had visited the awe-inspiring Ephesus site at Kusadasi, Turkey, a couple of days back, Knossos compared rather disappointingly to... Beautiful site, shame about the restoration... it spoils it and makes it look like a theme park :-( More

Darn the 19th century efforts at "preservation." So much of Knossos has been "restored" it feels more like a theme park than actual authentic ruins. The setting, however, is lovely, and it was a nice, easy trip outside of the city. More
