I actually enjoyed this more than Knossos, totally different vibe, very relaxed and quiet and you get a real feeling of how people used to live. We wandered about for an hour or more and sat in the sun soaking it all up. There are also further archaeological digs going on there, which makes for interesting viewing!!

We went to Crete in June 2011 and had a rental car on our holiday which meant we could criss cross the country side. While driving around we passed Gournia and stopped to have a look. It is on the main road between Agia Nikolaos and Sitia (Near Pahia Ammos).
What a find! It is so much better than Knossos...

The site is well labelled, and it is easy to walk up the narrow streets and imagine everyday life here, from the potters making large pots to the silversmiths working. It dates back 3000 years, but unlike many Minoan towns, was resettled by the Myceneans after fires which destroyed it at some stage, maybe a result of the volcanic explosion...
