On our first attemp to hike up there from Kamari, me and my wife ended up on a small church on the slope of the rock.So we decided to take a mini bus trip to ancient Thira next day. Wow! What a great view from up there. You could see all the island! Ruins are nice, nothing too magnificent, but still... more

Definitely walk it - don't drive - and wear shoes that don't get rocks stuck in them easily. Bring your camera, because the view along the hike is magnificent. The ruins themselves are nothing spectacular, but still worth an hour or so of your time. The most unique is the outdoor sanctuary - don't miss it, as it may look... more

Definitely the most interesting thing to do on Santorini. The drive up is a little hairy and if you're afraid of heights, pass. But it's really great to see the ruins--they were excellent--and the view of the Aegean is spectacular. Don't miss this. more

Ancient Thera is the most important, interesting thing to see on Santorini, in my opinion. Well, that and Oia. My husband drove our rented compact car up and down the s curve turns and it was like nothing we've ever driven before! Thankfully we were there in November when we were practically the only tourists on the island, so we... more

We drove up to Ancient Thira in May 2008 and really enjoyed the ruins. However, we didn't realize how steep, narrow and slippery the road would be. Think cobblestone road, many switchbacks, very narrow corners and cars and vans going both directions with little room to spare and you've got the picture. I would have been much happier (although hotter... more

We took our 4-wheelers up the switchback to Ancient Thera. I was a little nervous at first but it was not bad at all. If you're afraid of heights it may not be the best experience. To get to the ruins it is bit of a hike with some fairly slippery rocks. It was fairly hot so you may want... more

These paintings are so beautiful, words cannot describe them. They are quite moving to look at in their simplicity, the colours are wonderful. Its incredible to think what else there is to find out about these people. A trip to Santorini would not be complete without seeing the houses at Akrotiri and the wall paintings. The paintings are housed in... more

I was in Santorini in May, before the mass of tourists arrived. It was beautiful! Thira is a great little city. The peole are friendly and kind. A lot of the shops are similar, but you can find some nice treasures. The night life is fantastic, from pubs to clubs! We stayed at Charlina's at Perissa beach. It was a... more

The road up to ancient Thira is a steep series of switch backs - very narrow, but has a few pull out spots. Parts of the archelogical site can be seen from the parking area, but to really scope out the whole area a rough, steep trail must be followed. The day we went, there was a 'park ranger' at... more
