The Tunnel of Eupalinos or Eupalinian aqueduct, is a tunnel of 1,036 m (3,399 ft) length in Pythagorion, built in the 6th century BC to serve as an aqueduct. The tunnel is the second known tunnel in history which was excavated from both ends (amphistomon, "having two openings"), and the first with a geometry-based approach in doing so. Must visit... More

What makes it more special is the fact that workers were digging from the two opposite sides of the mountain and they finally met one another exactly at the same point in the middle... More

The whole idea of channelling water over a kilometre through a mountain is pretty incredible. When you realise this was done by hand 6 centuries BCE, it is positively mind blowing! The tunnels only deviated by about 15 centimetres from their planned course, all before Euclid did his sums and codified the calculations! My husband, a civil engineer was amazed... More

Samos is a very beautiful island but has not too much "tourist attractions". The Eupalinos tunnel is a nice place to see when you want to do something else besides taverns and beach fun. But don't expect too much. Check out your travel book to read some backgrounds about this 2500 year old tunnel before you go there. Entrance fee... More
