It was easy to get around the area and there were many signs letting you know what you were seeing. If you go in the winter time, as I did, dress warmy because the wind can make it feel much colder than it does down lower on ground level.

The location of the Lions above the gate and thir apparent age lead one to want to explore the area inside and on up the hill where the fortress is situated.

The Lion Gate is so called for the pair of lions flanking a single column above the lintel at the entrance to the Citadel of Mycenae. I've seen them in books; I've studied them in art history; I've heard about them throughout my education. But standing beneath these beasts at last is quite a thrill.

The Lion gate is one of the most Iconic sights in all of Greece.
It has been photographed 1000's of times and published in countless books over the years, but to see it in real life is a highlight of any visit to Greece.
As you walk under the monument and enter into Mycenae, you can't help but imagining Agamemnon...
