We decided to put one day aside for a `mega' drive on our recent visit to the peloponnese, and until we'd scanned the guidebooks and local maps Olympia was the dead cert. Noticing the ancient Byzantine site of Mystras though, and the promise of an apic drive through the gorges of the langhada pass, and views of the taygetos mountain... more

Highly recommend it. The journey there is breath taking from Kalamata on the Langadha pass, with a series of hairpin bends to negotiate. Have to say the roads are well maintained. I missed it on my first trip years ago - didn't know about it. Saw it recently - well worth a half day (or more if you can schedule that into your trip) You need to be reasonably fit (lots of steps) more

Mystra is a Byzantine fortress that can be seen from Sparta located on a hill at the base of Mt. Taygetos. It's about a 15 minute drive from Sparta to Mystra. I would suggest checking when Mystra opens and getting there early in the morning to avoid the heat of a sunny Greek summer day. Bring lots of water if... more

I drove into Mystras from Kalamata, through the mountains, in the middle of winter. It was beautiful and, at that time of year the surrounding area was a delightful combination of snow capped mountains and dark green and orange of yellow of the citrus plantations spreading out for miles.... The mystras archaeological sight was spectacularly breathtaking, being a clear day,... more
