Sometimes words pale to describe places that transcend mere locations. Mystras is an experience more than a destination; it combines activities and sights that should be interesting to different kinds of travelers. For starters the archaeological site itself isn't ancient, it's merely old - almost a * millennium* old, something which would have been stunning had it been any other... More

Mystras is beautiful, no question. There is plenty to explore on site and the views are spectacular. If you are fan of all things Byzantine, then I'm sure you will be impressed. I was underwhelmed by the experience overall - it just is not as impressive as Mycenea or Epirduros, but its also nowhere near as old. It did justify... More

If you're travelling near / past Sparta, then Mystras is definitly worth an hour or two to visit. Unfortunately we drove from Athens specficially to see Mystras, and unforunately it suffered by comparison. It is a really interesting site, has fantastic scenery, but it's mostly ruin, and many of those bear suspicously fresh looking concrete / reconstruction. There is a... More

This great Byzantine city is the real reason to go to Sparti. There are some great little tavernas down below in the modern Mystras which can supply coffee or a meal before or after your climb up the twisting lanes of this ruined city, ending in a citadel at the top. The Christian frescoes in the ancient churches are wonderfully... More

It's a big site and a lot of climbing but so beautiful! It's nice that there are some boards explaining what you see and how people lived in those times. We spent 2,5 hours in Mystras and that is the very minimum. It started raining then and we thought we better leave as the stones got slippery and with a... More

We just returned from a glorious trip to the Peloponnese. Our only regret: leaving only one hour to see Mystras. If you only have an hour it is still worth a visit, but plan to spend a half day here and not be bored. More

Very unique for a touch of history. It was wonderful to see what we have been taught of by our teachers and read in books. More

Just one word: awsome. Ok, another one: magnificent. Especially in autumn and spring, when millions of flowers bloom. Don't expect a lot of tourist. You might get 'unlucky' when one bus is there. But most of the time you have this wonderful place to yourself. More

Very unique. Relatively well preserved. Start at the top and work your way down. Don't rush. Plenty to see. Go early morning. Take plenty of water. Take a camera. Great views looking down over Sparta. Now I know why I got fit before going to Greece. Plenty of steps, but nothing is worth seeing unless you make the effort. More
