Quite an experience! I knew something was up when the Hop On & Off bus said they didn't allow pictures. So I immediately figured a way to see this forbidden fruit. I entered one of the paths into Christiania and instantly viewed graffiti and unkept areas in need of repair. At first I experienced apprehension as I seemed to be... more

I think this is probably the most like an outsider I've ever felt. No question we didn't belong, and it felt like we had come to gawk at the animals in their cages. Although no one approached us or said anything or even stared, I can totally understand why others indicated feeling unsafe. There was zero info about how this... more

A great place ot visit if you want to get off the beaten path in Copenhagen and do something different. It is a colourful community with an interesting history. Walking through the community you can see some very unique homes and you can learn about the diverse people who call Christiania their home. more

This place was a fright. It was recommended for the Christmas markets with hand made items and interesting one of a kind items. To get to the over-crowded-impossible to move in- hanger type building where the markets were, we walked past burning barrels, drunks, pot smelling air and muddy slop. We were disappointed to find that the markets were mostly... more

Interesting, but certainly wouldn't bother going back. Most of the people I saw except for the group of men who were drunk, which you can find on the street corner in my neighborhood in Paris, looked like middle class to upper middle class beautiful kids who "wanna be" hippies with some old originals mixed in. I could be wrong, but... more

I fear that some people convey Christiania as a sort of quirky, art fair, renaissance fair type of a place. Take care, this place is not safe, there are drug dealers, people who are high and drunk wandering around ready to verbally accost anyone who is wide-eyed and wandering around, and I would not, under any circumstances, recommend women go... more

26th of Sep. , I was wandering around Copenhagen, one of my backpacking stops, untill I found such an amazingly special 'free town'-Christiania. I was attracted by a colourful fairy-like 'dream-house' while strolling in Pusher street. Through this fully painted house, I entered a different world of dreams, art, imagination and freedom. The day I went, everywhere was specially decorated,... more

Definitely make a detour to Christiania - was one of the highlights of the visit to Copenhagen. Go on BIKE so that you can explore the whole thing. It's kind of like a big hippie village, though certainly has been kind of developed. But cool to walk around, explore, lots of water and pastoral settings, funked out houses, dogs, kids,... more

A really special place. The houses are fantastic all different, some tree houses, little boat type houses all the types of homes you could imagine. There was an excellent christmas market selling jewellery, woolens, cards, crystals, food and loads more. I was supprised to see so many families children with grandparents, not all where residents of Christiania, just there for... more

In 1971 this area was loaned to the people as a social experiment and declaired a "free state". It was a "semi-utopian" community that was self-governing and ecology oriented. I had always heard about this contriversial community and while in Copenhagen I decided to visit Christiania, provoked mostly out of curiousity. Walking through the archway from Prinsessegade (the street entrance)... more
