A great place ot visit if you want to get off the beaten path in Copenhagen and do something different. It is a colourful community with an interesting history. Walking through the community you can see some very unique homes and you can learn about the diverse people who call Christiania their home. more

This place was a fright. It was recommended for the Christmas markets with hand made items and interesting one of a kind items. Most of the people I saw except for the group of men who were drunk, which you can find on the street corner in my neighborhood in Paris, looked like middle class to upper middle class beautiful kids who "wanna be" hippies with some old originals mixed in. I fear that some people convey Christiania as a sort of quirky, art fair, renaissance fair type of a place. Definitely make a detour to Christiania - was one of the highlights of the visit to Copenhagen. Go on BIKE so that you can explore the whole thing. A really special place. The houses are fantastic all different, some tree houses, little boat type houses all the types of homes you could imagine. In 1971 this area was loaned to the people as a social experiment and declaired a "free state". It was a "semi-utopian" community that was self-governing and ecology oriented.
