The exterior of the Opera is very ugly, just like Kiasma. It looks like the tiling of your bathroom ended up to the top of the Opera. Indoors nicer, modern center for classical performing art.

Being an opera fan, I wanted to watch a performance at the National Opera, during our three-day stay in Helsinki. However, there were no performances on those days. Luckily, there was a free performance by different artists of opera arias Saturday afternoon in the foyer of the opera.

While I am not qualified to review the finer vocal points of the performance ("Die Tote Stadt" Nov 26 2010 -which to me was great), I can say that having been to more than a few operas throughout Western Europe, the Finnish National Opera is both literally and figuratively near the top of the world.
