Enjoy the fantastic view of the boats, fishermen and birdlife before entering the museum. For centuries Icelanders depended heavily on fishing and the sea for survival, and as a result the country has a long and rich maritime history. In the Reykjavik Maritime Museum you can explore this history, including beautiful ship-models, realistic scenery as well as both dried and life fish! The magnificent Coast Guard Vessel Óðinn, who took part in all three cod wars, is a part of the museum, docked outside in the beautiful harbor. Guided tours, please ask at the entrance. A wonderful place for a fun day out with family or friends! « less

Visit this museum and see how people had to earn a living at sea. How the products were made and sent to other countries too. More

This museum has three galleries and the historic Coast Guard Cutter Odinn. I was so impressed by the quality of the displays and the care that they took to make sure that the key items were translated into English. The museum does a remarkable job explaining Iceland's relationship with the sea, the growth of the fishing industry, and how much... More

The opening hours here are ridiculous. I'm a morning person and was annoyed that nothing in Iceland opens before 10, but the Maritime Museum doesn't unlock the doors until 11am. The museum is quite a hike from most of Reykjavik, at the far end of the old harbor. It's easier to take a bus there. The place is located in... More

It is a very well made museum, easy accessible, and children friendly! You can actually touch things and experience the old seaman life, as, for instance, spread salt on salt fish or lay down in the ship bunk beds, or touch old mariner's clothes! More

The museum looks impressive on approach with a large wooden trawler on the left, the retired Odinn coast guard boat straight ahead and a rusted Vikin Museum logo overhead. Interesting artifacts include Thor's Hammer, displayed throughout the museum, which is a viking symbol otherwise known as a swastika that was used to determine if someone had stole an item from...
