The church in and of itself is remarkable and spectacular, both in what one sees as well as the clientel it was built to serve. It is set within what used to be a very large enclosed and fully self-sufficient settlement for treatment of the mentally ill, and included fields of grain, its own mill, a real theater--also art nouveau,... The only Saturday we were in Vienna happened to be the Christmas eve, I was not sure if the church would have been open for visits at all, called them in the morning and got a confirmation that they will open at 3PM as usual. We arrived slightly late - got off at a wrong bus stop - keep in... More

My husband and I went to see the Kirche am Steinhof today and were very impressed at the outside and looked forward to seeing the interior, which was locked. We were told by an Austrian visitor that a tour would take place at 1.00pm, so we waited around until a tour guide appeared. He told us that the tour was... More

The problem with this church is that it is open only on Saturdays from 4 to 5pm. There is a guided tour at 3pm but only in german. The church was designed by Otto Wagner and decorated by Kolo Moser. It is a beautiful example of viennese art nouveau: Jugendstil. Both exterior and interior are wonderful in every detail.

Beautiful building, well worth the trip. The bus 48A takes you right outside the hospital premises, and then you have to walk up to the Church. Use one of the free Vienna maps with the public transportation network to get there. We took the 48A up to the Ring, but it was a tedious journey. There were 2 underground connections... More
