Maihaugen is a pretty impressive open air museum, taking the visitors from old time rural norway to early 1900 city life.
Some friends of mine took me to Maihaugen on a recent visit to Lillehammer. Since it was raining when we first arrived, we spent an hour or so walking through the indoor exhibits. "We won the land" was especially interesting. When the rain died down, we wandered through the open air museum. Maihaugen contains such an amazing amount of history....

I've always been fascinated my ethnological museums and I found this open air one very interesting for sure. There's a part inside, with images and infos about the history of the area, then you go outside and you're back in the old, traditional Norway. I went there in winter and I had the pleasure to see it with snow. This...

Very nice open air museum. Norwegian history and traditions and a nice view over the valley.
Very well done indoors and out - my Norwegian cousins took me there when I visited in Summer 2010. Well worth visiting - loved the houses representing different decades in time. Try the Rommegrot at the little food stand tucked back in the historic farm display area - YUM!
Nice way to spend a day looking at rural Norway's history. Nice exhibits in the entry hall and the building are pretty interesting to look at. The map you are given at entry is OK, but it could be a bit more clear. This place is not inexpensive, but then again few things in Norway are. Definately worth the price....

We intended to spend one day here in our week in Norway, but ended up spending two. The outdoor collections of buildings from old Norway were so interesting, and they are furnished with really old beautiful antiques so you can see how people lived in them. We met several very helpful guides along the way who told us very interesting...

If you stay in Lillehammer for a couple of days this place is a must visit at day time. It's a very pleasant place to just walk around enjoying the old buildings, nature and the various wildlife. Bring some bread to feed the ducks. Would be a nice place for a picnic or an early morning jog.
I got to visit this museum as part of a tour I did of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. My visit here was one of the highlights of the tour. The museum is fascinating in that you have a number of old preserved buildings. I found that interesting enough. The thing that really made my visit here was our guide Kari...
