Norge Sjofartsmuseum for sure is one of the best maritime museums in the world. In fact, all the 4 museums related to the sea in Bygdøy (Maritime, Fram, Kon-Tiki and Viking) complete each other in such a way, that I strongly recommend to spend at least 1 day in this area visiting all of them. Norway and the Scandinavia has... More

I would recommend visiting all 3 Maritime museums (a short distance from each other) in Oslo, to get a better understanding of Norway's rich maritime heritage. The 2 other museums being the Viking ship museum (reconstruction of old viking longboats) and the Kon Tiki Museum. The Maritime museum does have a great story to tell on Polar exploration, with its... More

This is a country with a huge maritime tradition. Therefore, its not surprising that this museum has one of the best maritime displays in the world (I have visited many, including the one at Greenwich). The stunning secret? There is a mini-theater at the basement that shows a free, 20 minute film on travel along the entire coast of Norway... More

I found this museum to be particularly interesting given that many of my ancestors were, in fact, sailors and fishermen and likely sailed on a few of the types of ships that are represented in this museum.

I love ship models of old sailing ships, so this museum was a treat for me to walk through and see the incredibly detailed, took-four-years-to-make models and the rest of the paraphernalia of sailing ships. There are quite a few, and while I just browse around looking at things, I'm not really a boat/sailing fan, just a "model boat" fan.... More

We actually stumbled across this museum after visiting the Kon Tiki museum, just across the road. There's enough fascinating exhibits here to keep you occupied for many hours here. The introductory panoramic video in the cinema shows Norways beautiful scenery as well as examples of Norwegian vessels. The main room next to this uses models, videos and computer programs to... After overlooking this museum on several visits to Oslo, favouring the Fram and the somewhat tired looking Kon-tiki instead, I ended up spending a very enjoyable hour or two in this museum. The exhibits include interiors of boats from various stages in Norway's illustrious history, but perhaps the best thing is the 15 minute film shown in the panoramic cinema.... More
