The west side of Egertorvet is preferred. The other side is not recommended after dark, unfortunately. Lack of police in the streets. Childrens parade at the constitution day 17 May is well worth to see.
Overpriced, overcrowded and dubious at night. It's a tourist trap. Unless it's the 17th of may, I generally just walk past it.
Nice walking street in central Oslo, all the main brand shops are located along the street. Good cafes and bars also.
Appealing at daytime with the Castle, University, Parlament, restaurants and parks within walking distance and charming at night .-)
lots of madness daily. puppeteers and t-shirt sales, crowds of people and loads of tourist shops but still a lot of fun. shopping! the only bad thing are the prostitutes that are everywhere, beggars, and drug addicts etc. that's ugly and embarrassing.
Karl Johans gate is the main street in Oslo, with a huge range of hotels, shops, souvenir stores, pubs and cafes. It makes for a wonderful night time walk.
Karl Johan is a fun street in Oslo. In the summer there are outdoor restaurants everywhere, street musicians from all over the world as well as street sellers. Since the days are long in the summer people are out walking around late and enjoying a nice evening. In the winter you can go ice skating. Bring skates or rent some....

While a bit of a walk, it was well worth exploring Karl Hohans street.
Stay away from the terrible first part, starting at Oslo S (railway station). From Stortinget and to the Royal Castle this is a place worth visiting.
