A few days ago,I spent two delightful days enjoying paintings and sculpture in this free museum.. Renowned for its great collection of Munchs,Krohgs,and Dahls,this art museum also has fine Dutch Master paintings(Bol,Elinga,Goyen,Pot,Daniel de Blieeck),excellent Italian paintings(Gaulli,Artemesia Gentileschi,Orazio Gentileschi),and delightful French paintings(Renoir,Monet,Cezanne,Gauguin,Picasso).Personal favorites were;Munch's"Day After",Christian Krohg's"Albertine To See The Police",Lars Jorde's"Landscape,Jutland",Gaulli's"Sacrifice of Noah",Cranach the Elder's"Golden Age",Daniel de Blieeck's"Church Interior",Pieter Elinga's"letter Carrier",Renoir's"Bathing... more

While the new exhibit system has offended some (moving some of the Tidemann paintings from prominence in the grand staircase), the concept of the exhibit still works well. The negatives that are clear immediately include no atmospheric control (open windows are clearly problematic for the paintings but, perhaps, is indicative of the egalitarian nature of Norway). It's almost ten years (12/2/1994) since 'The Scream' by Edvard Much was temporarily removed from the Nasjonalgalleriet by (the courts concluded) a gang led by Norweigan Paal Engers. Happily it was recovered three months later, with significant assistance by Scotland Yard. It makes you proud to be British - if only good police work was our sole export ... However,... more

the paintings are encased in grande fashion, with silent observant guards in each room. the gallery itself is worth one observation, and the selections of paintings were broad, and welcomed. norwegian painters, not well known in the states, brought to life: the 1800's, and the mountain paintings, would make julie andrews hit a high note. walking quielty on wooden floors,... more
