Plenty of way-marked footpaths and cycle trails make this a wonderful part of the country to explore by bike, or on foot. There's also 2 RSPB reserves; Nagshead and Symonds Yat, and some first class sites for fishing. Definately worth a visit. Possibly the inspiration for J R Tolkein's "Middle Earth" in "The Lord of the Rings" and understandably so! more

Pleasant but relatively small corner of Gloucestershire, with enough things to do to for a week's stay. We hired bikes, walked the sculpture trail (nice walk but, with a couple of exceptions, the sculptures were dull and uninteresting!), went on the steam railway from Lydford, visited the Clearwell Caves, and Puzzlewood Valley. The Forest of Dean is a glorious place to visit. The countryside and pretty villages and towns are worth going in themselves but the area seems to be packed with things to do. The actual forest, and nearby Wye Valley are perfect for cycling and walking, for the serious and also for families. There are castles, caves, gardens, shopping, bird... more
