We visited last year on a dreadful day. Having such a top-class facility to hand is one more good reason to stay around the Barnard Castle area. Wide-ranging collection, much of it fine art, but well worth a viewing in its own right backed up by a knock-out cafe.

Fantastic museum that would rival some of the big London museums. If you can, get to see the silver mechanical swan.

Pleasantly surprised with this day out. A look around a mansion which has been converted into a museum. A silver mechanical swan not to be missed, exhibits which change regularly and an art gallery. Surrounded by wonderful gardens and an adventure play area for the little ones and it adds up to a very good day out. If you are... More

Well worth the day we spent going round. However by the time we reached the final half floor of paintings and porcelain we were suffering from fine art fatigue - possibly lack of practice at these things - and this despite the excellent late lunch in the restaurant! The sheer variety of things they had collected was fascinating. What was... More

I couldn't agree less with Tony Bristol below - of all the museums I know I can't think of one with more 'soul and passion.' It comes from the fact that this amazing French chateau in the middle of Teesdale was the creation of a devoted - but sadly childless - couple, John and Josephine Bowes (she was French) who... More

This is a very large and impressive building but the layout of the collection lacks any sole or passion. It is old fashioned in the way the it is run and to be honest a little boring unless you have a specific interest.

This is an outstanding museum especially the mechanical silver swan. The rooms are laid out with period furniture and antiques. Well worth a visit, the town is great for a walk round too.

Well worth a visit, but give yourself lots of time to appreciate the 4 floors of remarkable artworks, including the 18th century Silver Swan automaton (working daily at 2pm).
