without doubt the most beautiful example of norman architecture in the world. from the moment of arrival in the city you cannot help but be overawed by this domineering structure. as you approach through durhams delightful medievel streets the full scale of this huge cathedral and its neighbouring castle gradually impacts upon you. it truely is a stunning site, however remains... more

fantastic site, shame about cars being parked all round the "green" (which is owned by the University) impossible to get a photo without vehicles included. Why this is allowed I can't figure out, this is a world heritage site being spoiled by modern attitudes. Would have scored a higher rating if it wasn't for this. more

Durham Cathedral has an enviable location, lying on a peninsular almost surrounded by the River Wear, and if you walk along The Bailey on its east side, right to the end, you will come through an archway into the wooded valley where you can walk either side of the river. If you cross Prebends Bridge, with its inscription by Tennyson... more

Stunning location above the River Weir, backed by a lovely little city with many Georgian buildings - very hilly but not enough to put anyone off visiting. Fantastic castle - part now of the University. The cathedral has glorious stained glass windows, especially 'Rose' window. Calm and spiritual feeling inside. The most magnificent architecture. This building captivated the artist William... more

The Nine Lesson Service is a highlight of anyone's Christmas. It brings the cathedral to life - but get there early! more

Having travelled to many places around the world, I still find that the first World Heritage Site I ever saw has an amazing effect on me. Of course, Durham Cathdral was not a WHS then. It was just the Cathedral a few miles up the road. I was a young, inarticulate young girl. But now as then it challenges the... more

Starting with the Sanctuary Knocker the is a vast Norman Cathedral full of delights and religous inner calm. The climb up the 365? steps of the tower is so worth it for a panoramic view of the wonderful City of Durham and Castle. more

Durham Cathedral is an amazing place to visit, It combines history, religion and splendour throughout the building. The staff are knowledgeable, helpful and nice. I visited the shrines, alters, monks dormitories, the library, gift shop, quadrangle and many more places of interest. It only seemed a short while, but 4 hours passed and I was still interested, and enjoying myself.... more

Maybe it was the fact that a few scenes from Harry Potter had been filmed here -- but my 9 and 5 year old kids really loved this place. We visited three times while we were in Durham. This cathedral is an amazing example of the transition from Norman to Gothic architecture and is absolutely stunning. But it also seems... more

I've seen a lot of cathedrals and temples in my journeys but I have to admit this one is a wonderful combination of history and architecture. It was the only reason I went to Durham and well worth it. Grab a brochure or guidebook and wander around; there's plenty for the religious and even more for those interested in local... more
