Nothing to dislike about this journey, although it would be difficult with a mobile home or caravan. The view when you arrive at your destination is just marvellous and well worth the journey

We traveled around Northern Italy without too much preliminary research and this drive was recommended to us by our hotel clerk in Bormio. If you like driving in any way at all, if you like beautiful natural vistas, if you like the sight of snow capped mountains, if you have just one breath of life in you - you will...

This rates as one of the best alpine passes I have driven and I have done a few.
When we first came up here from Switzerland, we decided to turn right and go up a bit further up the mountain so the kids could play in the snow. It was crowded with bikers and it was then that we were...

Stelvio Pass ranks amongst one of the most popular Alpine drives. 48 hairpins in 15kms (on the Stelvio side) makes it quite demanding for car and driver and shouldn't be underestimated in terms of time, fuel or fatigue. It's great though, and after a rally-style forest section the road bursts out in to the open valley and upwards through some...

What can I say about the Stelvio Pass? Only that it is sooooo worth the effort to drive to so you can experience the visceral thrills of driving on 3 passes that must rank as some of the best driving roads in the world (with apologies to “Top Gear”). The Stelvio Pass itself is my favourite as the 48 hairpins...

After staying in Bormio I went up and over the Stelvio Pass twice on a Rocket 3 motorbike. Both times it was in glorious sunshine and although enjoyable it is not a road suitable for bigger bikes as the hairpins are never ending. If it had been raining or snowing then I would have though twice about it especially second...

We just finished driving the Stelvio Pass. We drove it from Bolzano to Como in a pair of vintage Alfa Romeos. The drive up/down the pass is daunting but do-able. Leave a whole day and watch the weather. The pass can be closed during foul weather and after you've been up it you'll know why.
We were surprised at the...

2 motorbikes, 2 couples braved the Stelvio Pass in June 2010. Set off early from Lake Garda, glorious sunshine arrived at the bottom of the pass around 4pm. This was the point of our trip, still had fine/dry weather although temperatures were falling as the altitude climed. Breath-taking views on the way up, soon gave way to sleaty rain and...

The only time the Stelvio is closed during the summer is a day in August when it is reserved for cyclists. That said try to avoid Fri-Sun and holidays or if you are there then stay very local, get up with the sun and drive the Trafoi side. Alternatively I saw virtually no traffic that side from mid-late afternoon.

Alarm goes off at 5.45. Out of the door 45 minutes later.
28th August 2010, the 10th annual Stelvio Bike ride to the Stelvio Pass (2760m), the second highest in the Alps. The road is traffic-free for the day, 48 hairpins, 25kms and a rise in altitude of approximately 1810 m, the average incline is therefore about 7.4%.
