Its an ancient column. Kids build columns out of playdoh. Think of what will be dug up after we collapse. Not a column, but the SPACE NEEDLE, not a chariot, but a FIAT PUNTO with a/c.
Saint Oronzo blesses aloft from his enormously high and ornamental pilaster. His expression is beatific and his gesture is warm (I have a very good zoom). He oversees a lovely piazza where you can sit and enjoy the atmosphere, and see the Roman teatro as well.
It is in the square, very nice place.there are lot of shops near ,and very good restaurants.it is in the oldest part of the city of Lecce.
after some problem to book a table because of my bad Italian pronunciation (Sant'Oronzo spoken fast seems a very popular insult in Italy as I was told...) we finally get the chance to have a great food experience ! very good wine list, lot of choice "à la carte"
The St Orontius story is all over the area, as are his statues. Supposedly Brindisi presented this one to Lecce, in the believe that Lecce's patron saint had ended the 17th century plague in that town, but I believe that the enormous statue in Ostuni is pretty nearly identical, and too high to see very well anyway.
