This is a lovely town and the ceramics are worth the visit! We stayed in a B&B located on the famous Staircase and used Caltagirone as a base for visiting several places in the area. TIP: As lovely as the Staircase is, I would not choose to "stay" directly on them again. Parking is non-existant so you have to trudge... More

I have never been to a more aesthetically pleasing celebration than this festival. Be sure to arrive there early to see the candles before sunset, then be there for the lighting of the candles and subsequent procession. Absolutely fantastic - I hope to see it again!

Caltagirone has about 40,000 population, so it's a really good size for walking around and exploring. There are 40 churches... More

Though ignored by the majority of tourists, this hilltop town is worthy of your time. Famous for its ceramics, especially its famous staricase where over 100 stairs each feature a different pattern, the city has more to offer. Some splendid churches, a wonderful theatre, a delightful park and a population still steeped in their ancient past. It has been singularly... More

Caltagirone in July is a vibrant and lively city. I was there over the period of the St Giacomo festival (1994) where la scala is light up on 2 conscecutive days, using candles to give an illumination of the many and varied designs of the city of Caltagirone. These all include the emblem of the city an eagle. during this... More
