Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This site has been reimagined and now gives a far more detailed view of the landscape and a more detailed explanation of what occurred here. The looped walk from the carpark to the British position and onto the Pa site is about 1.8km long, undulating but not challenging. The Pa sites trenches and tunnels are still clearly visible some 180 years on. The road from the highway has also been upgraded, as has the carpark which now includes toilets. If you visited here years ago as we did it’s certainly worth another look now.

Fantastic place - we walked to the old British camp first - all sensitively presented with a great view of the Pa site on the hill. Walked back to the Pa site and it's well preserved - plenty of information on boards about the battle. I managed to find a book about the battle when I was in Kerikeri so have a better understanding of the whole site now. The authorities are doing a lot of work on access, parking and the actual site - apparently they will eventually have a mock up of part of the Pa to show exactly how it was built which will add even more interest. I would consider this a must see for all NZrs as a momentous part of our history

The tasteful signage and concise information is excellent. This, combined with the natural geography of the area, helps the visitor to recreate in their mind the significant event which occurred here and the people involved.

Ruapekapeka is New Zealand's best maintained and presented battlefield site. New memorials, high quality tracks, excellent interpretation panels, sensitive treatment of both sides in the battle.
Plus the excellent Timperley Reserve alongside with its superb Puriri trees.

Go there as soon as you can.

Something we were told about but weren't sure if we could make it happen. Another hidden spot with lots of history. Off the main road and up on the hill. Great way to break up the drive back to Auckland. Well worth taking a visit if into history, and interested in Pa sites.

My husband wanted to visit here as he has studied Maori history and this is certainly a significant historic site. It’s about 6kms drive each way off the main highway on an unsealed gravel road so be aware of that. For such a significant place I found the signage severely lacking. No boards showing the different walking routes (there were several) and duration of how long each route would take. The main Maori structure at the end had several plaques on it, all in Maori with no English. We are a bilingual country and more information and some English language would have helped non Maori speaking visitors appreciate and understand the site better.

The Ruapekapeka Pa is an important site in NZs history and is accessed by a short walking track. There are several information boards and I recommend watching the short film on the Radio NZ website. The walk was gentle and easy only taking 5mins

The history of this Pā site is very interesting. Walking up to the pā was eerie but not in a bad way. You could feel the wairua. Seeing the trenches and imagining what occurred here was a surreal experience.

We visited this wahi tapu site recently on a trip up north. It's a beautiful trip on a gravel road, easy road to handle if you just drive slowly - with views for miles as the road climbs, and there were a lot of hunting hawks on the day we visited. It's easy to get to both sites of battle - the British camp and Ruapekapeka Pa, both well kept and the history of the area explained and displayed graphically and well. The sites are clean and well maintained, and it's very easy, as you walk around, to see how clever the design of Ruapekapeka Pa was. If you are interested in Aotearoa/NZ's history, this is absolutely worth a visit.
