An easily accessed Castle located just outside of Oughterard. It is set in a beautiful rural location and we enjoyed the fact that it was well presented without being over crowded with tourists. It is easily accessible for both children and the mature traveler. There is a short, attractive walk from the parking lot to the Castle and it is... More

A wonderful example of a 16th century castle, restored extremely well with wonderful examples of 16th century building techniques. A great history of the O'Flaherty's, the castle itself and being able to explore the grounds along with the castle made a terrific experience for anyone. We are going back because you can't ever see enough.

We went a few years ago and to my recollection there was publicity about bats living in the castle. We thought this was great and it made it even more enjoyable. Lovely place to sit on a sunny day.

Brought along two five year olds ,a girl and a boy and both were equally impressed with the castle. Its very basic and not much there really but kids really enjoyed it and if I remember correctly it a family ticket was only about 7 or 8 euro so not that expensive for an afternoon of fun. If sunny bring... More

We stopped here towards the end of the day spontaneously due to the sign out on the main road and were pleasantly surprised. A woman named Jenny talked to us for a long time and gave us a tour around. She was incredibly knowledgeable about the tower, as well as the history and land of Ireland in general, and was... More

Our experience was extraordinary. We learned more about Irish history, Connemara, this particular tower house, and the ecology and culture of the region in an hour than we had in days of study elsewhere. The staff member Jenny who assisted us was exceptionally talented and friendly, with a degree in archeology-- she really knew her stuff. Ask her questions if... More

We were lucky enough to arrive at a time when they weren't too busy, so my wife and I got a private guided tour rather than making us wait until more people arrived, which earns them points for good service right off the bat. The castle is one of the more well preserved ones in Ireland, with all four floors... More

Aughnanure is definitely worth going of the beaten track to visit, it is beautifully restored and a great asset to Oughterard.

While on a tour of Ireland and Northern Ireland, we had the pleasure of spending time at Aughnanure Castle. The grounds were very quiet and well preserved. We enjoyed climbing the castle to visit the various rooms. A note to other travelers: at the castle, they were advertising (at the ticket office) a heritage pass which would have given us... More
