I can highly recommend Nga Manu, if only for the Eels. It is extremely interesting to get up close to the Eels - so do pay to do the feeding. The kids will either be revolted or delighted - I'm sure you can guess what the reaction was between my 12yo son and 10yo daughter! There are other reasons to... More

Like to be among the birds and bush without too much preparation? Between Waikanae beach and the village is a native bird and bush sanctuary, Nga Manu (Maori for The Birds - pronounced "nar Marnoo"). There is reasonable charge (towards maintenance) at the Visitors' Centre and plenty of information about the trees, birds and other creatures (eels, weta). Paths are... More

I joined the bird feeding tour and to my surprise, I actually got to experience feeding the birds myself and not just watch the staff feed from behind screens. Learnt a lot about the different types of native birds. The nature reserve also had an amazing bush walk and lookout point. I would definitely recommend the reserve and the bird... More

I visited this place about 20 years ago when it was in a more natural state and liked it better then. I'm sure children and school trips would love it but found the caged birds and duck feeding a bit much for the price asked. However there is a pleasant meandering walk through the bush with lots of tuis to... More

Got to be there by 11am for the feeding! It's so neat to be able to feed the birds!

This is a lovely day out for old and young alike but better on a day it is sunny, take a picnic and enjoy the walks and all the native bush and birds. They have a new kiwi chick and a lot of tuataras which are interesting. Don't miss the 2pm eel feeding!

Its so unlikely for tourists to see Kiwi in the wild, that it is next best to see them in a nature preserve. They have a darkened room and you can watch the feeding of the Kiwi. They have some beautiful specimens of native flora and fawna and walking trails to enjoy. Great for birding. Nice little shop .

This is relatively a less-known attraction around Wellington, but we definitely recommend to visit. The kiwi house is a good chance to see the kiwis, some bird cages provide you to look at NZ native birds, such as kereru, kea, tui and so on. The entrance fee $15 for adult is relatively affordable price compared to the other similar attractions... More
