we loved the quirky but fascinating. the permanent collection has a cabinet of curiosities including a taxidermists 'pegasus' , if you don't like very modern art it is still well worth a visit if only to see the arcades and fabulous painted ceilings.
We only knew about it from the owners of the chateau de saint loup as it is...

This castle was one of the great Châteaux of the Loire built by the high dignitaries of the kingdom. It was constructed in the 16th century to house the large collection of paintings and objets d’art of Claude Gouffier, chief equerry to Henri II. The sumptuous decorations and an exceptional gallery of Renaissance paintings in the style of the Fontainebleau school are complemented by fine, carved and painted panelling. The Château is now home to Curios and Mirabilia, a remarkable collection of contemporary art and curiosities. Open:> 1st June to 30th September: from 10.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.> 1st October to 31st May: from 10.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Last admission 1 hour before closing time. Closed:> 1st January, 1st May, 1st November, 11th November and 25th December. Admission fees: Adults : 7,50 €; Concessions (18 to 25) = 4,50 €; Free admission: minors under 18*; Free admission: 18-25 years old* (citizens of one of the 27 countries of the EU or are non-European permanent residents of France) * excluding school groups

Superb collection in a great ambiance, I cannot understress enough how great this place is - all our clients love this awesome museum in the middle of nowhere!
Wonderful collection of fine arts, in a great museology - the castle itself is already worth a visit, but the adde value of the exceptional arts collection makes it even more worth...

I have been coming to this chateau for more than twenty years and still I do not tire of it.
The inspiration for its art collection was Claude Gouffier who was born and died here (1510-70). Gouffier was an avid collector of books and unusual objects; he was also the model for the "Marquis de Carabas" from the fairy tale...
