I really went to Malmaison for the roses. If you're going for that reason, think again. The gardens are not really maintained as others have noted. Nor do they specialise in roses of the period. The gardens behind the Chateau are charming and overgrown and contain a number of historic trees. They are a pleasant antidote to the manicured parks... More

We wanted to visit the Chateau Malmaison in Paris - Napoleon and Josephine's place. We travelled 35 minutes from Paris/Defence with the bus 259, we have crossed very nice small towns. When we arrived on a Sunday at 12:15 - the castle was closed because there was lunchtime!!! So they told us to come back at 13:30, but there was... More

It contains the history of the relationship between Josephine and Napoleon. The house is decorated in the empire style, probably pretty much as it would have been when they lived there.

Having visited Chateau Fontainbleu, I was interested in viewing Napoleon's country home with first wife, Josephine, where he was reputed to be very happy. The contrast between the formal splendor of Fontainbleu and the casual country charm of MalMaison is remarkable. But poor Josephine would be appalled at the state of her beloved rose garden, the shabby state of the... More

This is a lovely little Château, more a large country house, really, situated about 12 kilometres (7 miles) from Paris. By train, catch Line A RER to Rueil-Malmaison and then take the 144 bus from the station to the centre of town - a large square with a church, Eglise de Sts. Pierre et Paul, in which lies Joséphine Bonaparte's... More

Just outside Paris (we took the bus from la Defense), Malmaison proves that Josephine had taste and class. Exquisite furnishings, beautiful Gobelins tapestries, fabulous faux finishes, and enough passementerie to go around the world several times. This chateau is an interior designer's inspirational paradise and I highly recommend the audioguide to help you through the visual delights.

This chateau is absolutely one of the highlights of my visits to France. I am surprised that it is not more well known. It is a relaxing place to browse, so interesting, and the gardens are peaceful. We had a bag lunch under the "Josephine" tree, where there are benches, and imagined Napolean and Josephine sharing a visit there. We... More
