Loved this well-preserved site and the gardens behind. It must be wonderful to go to a live event here.

This amphitheatre, located in the proximity of the Roman theatre, is pretty well-preserved, although not as well as the theatre, and is a compulsory visit. It's not as sumptuous as other Roman amphiteatres (such as the Colosseum or the Verona Arena) but it's worth the visit. Since the entire archeological ensemble has laid underground for many centuries, it's pretty well... More

The Amphitheater is not as well preserved as the Theatre next to it but it is still worth a visit just for the sheer size and the history of it. It's a combined entry ticket anyway so don't miss this one out.

Friends in Madrid recommended the Roman ruins in Merida and I’m sorry to say that they were very second rate. In terms of size the archaeological remains are certainly impressive, but cannot be compared to other Roman structures in Wales (the fortified walls in Caerwent and the legionary fortress of Caerwent), North Africa, in particular Lepcis Magna in Libya, Dougga... Our visit to Mérida was held almost with the only objective of visiting this group of ruins and what a pleasant surprise when we face such an example of conservation and integration of the historical legacy in the city life! A compulsory visit, for sure!

The Roman Amphitheater was built in 8 B.C. by Agrippa and has an elliptical shape, holding 15,000 spectators. Its major axis is 126 m. and its minor is 102 m. It was built with concrete, granite ashlars, little ashlars, masonry or bricks, but the building materials were not of high quality. The amphitheater was used for fights between gladiators and... Seeing these Roman ruins was the highlight of our visit to Merida. There are well marked paths that take you through all the ruins with plenty of areas to explore. Seating in the theater, you could easily imagine what it was like back then. My children were thrilled to visit this and still talk about it. Across the street from... More
