One of the most enjoyable days we had, while in Bilbao was when we took a 35 minute metro ride to Portulagete , a medieval fishing village on the banks of the Nervion River.

OK it's not as cheap as it once was, but you can tell that this a relatively recent asset for Bilbao. Clean, secure, lots of space, decent frequencies, runs all night at the weekends & during fiestas. Creditrans is the easiset ticket for a weekend visit.
