About

We visited the Roman Catacombs Museum in Valkenburg last week and were quite disappointed. The museum is a replica of the ancient catacombs of Rome, i.e. a bunch of plaster and paint in an old quarry. The entrance fee was 16 Euros, which we think is way too much for what you get. The only positive thing I can say is that the guide was very friendly and professional. She explained the history and symbolism of the frescoes and statues with enthusiasm and knowledge. But honestly, I would rather save my money and go to Rome someday to see the real thing.

Obviously these are not the actual catacombs of Rome. But they certainly are an impressive replica made around 1900.
Our guide Ben, was very knowledgeable and fun to listen to. He knew a lot about the history of this place and the actual catacombs.
Don't forget to bring a sweater if you come on a hot day, it's only 53F / 12C inside the caves.
Definitely worth the visit.

We enjoyed a lot the tour through the katakomben, and especially all the stories from the guide. They were funny, informative and very interesting!

This was a tour which tokd about a rich guy from somewhere in the 1900's who was bored to dearh and had nothing better to do than make some fake catacombs.

It should be more clear in the description of the tour that the catacombs are fake. I wasted my time on this stupid tour.

It is a replica, but, trust me...fantastic!
If you are here, go and visit them. Much nicer than all the other caves in Valkenburg.

These catacombs are almost identical copies of many of those under the city of Rome and they are built into some old quarry and mine workings. Indeed, so accurate are these copies that when a Roman catacomb was damaged, the copy at Valkenburg was studied to see how the original should be restored. We were a mixed group of Dutch and English speakers and one of our party was recovering from a knee operation. Our very knowledgeable guide was an excellent English speaker and he devised a route that included a large number of the catacombs that could be accessed on a ‘step free’ basis. That did mean the we missed out on a few of the examples. That did not matter as the content that we did see and the explanation that went with them was fascinating enough. An excellent visit. The only downside to this museum is that parking has to be found on street a little walk away from the site.

I was very conflicted with my visit to the Romeinse Katakomben. While I found it was very interesting to see that someone would take the time and effort to recreate the catacombs in Rome, it was also a bit underwhelming. I could appreciate the work that went into this but at the same time, it was a bit disappointing. The tour guide spoke very little English but did provide us with some info in English so we could understand what was supposed to be portrayed. Having seen some genuine Roman paintings such as these, the copies are less exciting to see. If you keep in mind that these are copies and the artistic passion of someone, you will probably enjoy it.

Not really a historical place. This is a copy of most representative rooms of Roman catacombs, or so the guide said. Interesting, especially if you are interested in early Christian history. One note: wear something warm, it's cold undeground even on a warm day.

The Roman catabombs in Valkenburg are replicas of parts of the early Christian catacombs that are located in Rome. Although the tombs might not be original, they give you a great insight into Roman culture, religion and burial rites. Something that is visible is the transition from the believe in the Roman gods to worship of the Christian god and the mixture in between. Symbols play a central part in this and show us how Roman signs were given a Christian meaning over time. Also, because the replicas are crafted in the early 1900, the museum tells us a lot about that time period and it's prevailing views on the goals and set up of museums.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and knew how to make the material interesting, fun and understandable for everyone in our group. However I am not sure I'd recommend this activity for smaller children as the information can be quite abstract for them.

It is, obviously, not possible to enter the catacombs individually so it's is required that you join one of the three tours a day. The flooring is sometimes unleveled and passages may be narrow, making it less accessible for some. Tickets are 12,5 and entry is free of you have a Museumkaart.

Oh, this looked so promising! Roman catacombes!
How disappointed I was when after paying the entree fee the guide proudly announced that it was a replica from Rome. And not a very well done one.
