This art gallery is genuinely interesting and has a good range of exhibits. I spent a very happy couple of hours here looking at works from Van Gogh, through Corot to Keifer.
The gallery is well organised on all levels and I witnessed an excellent interactive session for schoolchildren while I was there.
On a practical note for the visitor,...

Lovely building, took my wedding photos here, but it is good for any occasion. general exhibition is always great to view more than once, the facilities are thoughtfully placed, that you could spend the whole day here comfortably. Lunch at the restaurant also has an amazing view of the nearby waters.
In addition to the permanent (and FREE) collections the Art Gallery of NSW hosts amazing exhibitions from other art galleries and musuems around the world. Previous exhibitions have included the Picasso exhibition and the China's Terracotta Warriors, as well as the Archibald prize!
I just love the NSW. Brilliant collection of local works, with some of the best pieces from Olsen, Whitely, Grace Cossington, Michael Johnson, Lloyd Rees, Streeton and Roberts. Favorite for me is Streeton's Redfern Station, but the whole place is just the most fantastic chronicle of the development of Australia's (and specifically Sydney's) personality.

Wednesday night in the Cafe. M Carney Ensemble were playing. Dined with friends. Pleasant evening outing after a hard day at work.
Worth a quick peak if you're already at the botanic gardens. The sidney nolan paintings are accessible australian artworks any visitor can appreciate. The 20th century and contemporary collections have vastly improved my enjoyment over the past decade.
The Art Gallery of NSW is a favourite place to visit as it is well laid out and has the bonus of being situated opposite the leafy Domain parklands and a minute's walk to the sensational Bottanical Gardens. If you can combine the two experiences yo have heaven. Anyway back to the gallery. There is the classic section and the...

Not The Tate, not the Met. But this is not a gallery to be overlooked. There is a wonderful Asian art section. Incredible Aboriginal artworks. A stellar display of great Australian artists and a fair representation of European Art. The cafe and restaurant here both have stunning views and it is an easy walk from the CBD
On the rainy day we enjoyed our visit here for some culture and a nice lunch in their restaurant.
